Good Day for Trees in the Peak District

Out for a walk in the Peak District with good friend Peter Moore from Kenilworth. Took this tree on my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone and edited in Snapseed. The wind was strong and made it tricky to check the image as my eyes were watering so much.

Tried to post this earlier but didn't go.

Sand Dunes and Tree Tops in Colorado

New photos of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Aspen tree tops have been added to the web site. Last year we arrived at the sand dunes just in time to be caught in a blizzard as we walked over to where I wanted to take my photos from. This year it was bitterly cold, even the sand was frozen so it was a bit easier to walk on, but it was sunshine and good clouds and the views were spectacular. I took several films but have so far only scanned and edited 2  photos.

We also drove over the McClure Pass while travelling from Telluride to Aspen. The Aspen trees at the pass were great for pictures and I mainly took up into the canopy. It was a bit tricky moving around as the snow was soft and deep and I hadn't bothered to put my snowshoes on, oops! The dark sky was from being high (2671 metres, 8763 feet) and a dark yellow or orange filter on my Mamiya 7 43mm lens. A red filter was completely unnecessary.

Natures Snow Sculptures at Wolf Creek

Yes, even more new images on my main web site. This time some shots of the fantastic snow shapes created by the weather at the Wolf Creek ski area in southern Colorado. The trees were amazing! Last year we visited Wolf Creek and skied it in a snow storm that lasted most of the day
but this year it was spectacular. Deep snow everywhere and wall-to-wall blue sky and a bit of high cloud here and there.

Good Day in the Peak District!

Day 2 for Clive and Alex in the Peak District. We had a pleasant surprise today with good weather when we were expecting heavy rain! Lots of sunny spells and clouds and blue sky.
We started from Surprise View above Hathersage with Owler Tor rocks (see photo by Alex below), then on to a couple of shapely trees before going down to Bole Hill Quarry and the millstones and Silver Birch trees. Surprised there were no climbers on the cliffs here. Lots of good shots and different angles to look for through the trees. Views through to Kinderscout with patches of snow on too. Then to the Fox House Inn for a good lunch.

After lunch it was on to Padley Gorge for small waterfalls in the sunshine! Also some tree roots. Then picked off the lone tree on Rushup Edge on our way back as well as panoramas of Kinderscout. Finished at home with a cup of tea and checking out the images from the day!

A good day.

Bryce Canyon and Sweden new images

Mora jetty in Lake Siljan, Mora, Sweden
Bryce Canyon National Park
Bryce Canyon National Park
Some of my Bryce Canyon photographs from last January have finally made it onto my web site. There was quite a bit of snow and we mostly snowshoed to move around. Lots of rock formations, shadows, patterns, the odd tree here and there. Not just for colour photographers!

There is also the first image from our Scandinavian trip last September / October. It's a simple shot of a jetty in Lake Siljan at the town of Mora in Sweden. The lake is the 6th largest in Sweden. Nice cloud or two, good reflections.

3rd Time Lucky at Red Rocks Lake

Another snowshoe day today. This time in the Indian Peaks Wilderness around Brainard Lake.
I wanted to get a shot of the mountains from Red Rocks Lake. I saw the shot 4 and a half years ago but knew it would be better in winter.
After 2 failed attempts last January we returned and today was the day!
The forecast was a bit iffy but we went anyway and what a good jjob we did; it was fantastic.
Red Rocks Lake was frozen and wearing snowshoes I could wander anywhere to frame the shot.
The mountains were snowy with blue sky and clouds swirling around the tops. A few snowy rocks made for a good foreground and I was excitedly taking pictures.
Third time lucky it was!

The day had just started and we carried on to Brainard Lake along the snowshoe trail, mostly through untracked snow.
From Brainard we headed to Long Lake. There was deep drifted snow here so we decided we would make better time on the frozen lake surface.
It was 2pm at the far (west) end so we decided to make our way back. The time and the fact that it was snowing steadily made up our minds!
A few tree shots on the return in rather dull conditions. The mountains had long since disappeared.
Just 4 rolls of 120 Ilford FP4 (10 shots per roll) but some crackers in there!
It's always rather special when a shot that's been years in the planning comes good.

Tomorrow we ski Winter Park and Friday Copper Mountain.
Not much left of this trip. We leave Colorado on Sunday and get home on Wednesday.

Swedish Lakes (and Trees)

Left Harnosand early, after scraping thick ice off windows of car. Jolly cold for time of year!

Headed back towards hills and lakes to Sveg and then Sarna. Dozens of lakes and millions of trees; mixture of conifers and silver birch mostly.

Took a few tree shots but also typical lake shots. Used a dark yellow filter to lighten the silver birch foliage which was a bright yellow / orange colour, as well as darkening the blue sky. Good clouds this afternoon.

Also found a church and separate wooden bell tower at Alvros, just east of Sveg.

Ended day at Mora by another lakeside. Lots of photos from shore, including trees, boats and the odd jetty.

A 6 film day (60 images).
Heading south tomorrow and expect to end the day close to Stockholm so that we can have most of Sunday in the city.

Good Weather in the Peak District

We are having great weather in the Peak District right now. From Wednesday onwards it haas been warm and sunny with nice clouds to add interest to the skies. The forecast is for it to continue right through the weekend possibly changing on Monday to more normal changeable (as in wet!) weather. Good picture taking weather if you can get away. Leaves are changing already on Oak, Sycamore and Beech trees as well as bracken. This means if you are a film user that you can use coloured filters on the lens to modify the shade of grey that yellows and browns otherwise produce. A yellow or dark yellow filter will brighten turning leaves to light grey but the trunks and branches will stay dark. If printed with high contrast this will give an almost infra-red effect. Worth a try. Also lots of water in the rivers, streams and waterfalls from rain earlier in the week.

New Snowy Trees and Landscapes

Just completed some snowy tree landscape images for the web site (should be available for viewing from Tuesday).

Taken mainly around Boulder in Colorado they also include the Flatiron mountains (just on the edge of the city) under quite different conditions.

Finally finished processing the films from recent trips. These included the last few from Edinburgh as well as Northumberland castles and the Yorkshire Dales near Bolton Abbey. Will try and scan Edinburgh shots later this week.

Colorado Ski Resort Photographs

I have just scanned and tweaked 27 images taken at 4 ski resorts in America in January this year.

The weather was mixed so there are both sunny and misty shots. Lots of views including mountains like the Gore range, snowy trees and skiers.

The ski areas, all in Colorado, include Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone.

They should be on the web site on Tuesday. They will be under Skiing, Landscapes and Recent. Hope you can wait that long!
